How to set goals and CRUSH EM'
#GOALS
I really hate to toot my own horn,
But HONK HONK!
I love setting goals. I seriously live for it! I have goals for every day, week, month and year! It sounds like a lot (maybe it is), but it helps me to stay motivated and focused on what I want as a mom, wife and person.
There is a method behind successful goal setting, that people don't implement and find that most fall short of their goals. When you set goals and never find success, it can cause negativity towards the whole process. Think about it, if you kept trying over and over and never saw progress, why would you be motivated? This is why it is so important to set goals the right way, so you can CRUSH THEM!
When I set goals I set them high. I mean goals so high that they cause most people to doubt. It happens all the time in my world because I dream big! I love dreamers, I think everyone should dream big. Not all goals, are the dream goals however! I have many different goals that fall into different categories. I have fitness goals, work goals, church goals, mom goals ect. Why stop at one?!
Why should I set goals?
"The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score."- Bill Copeland
Setting goals gives you a purpose. Every morning you wake up and go out and do what you do, for a reason. It can be as simple as waking up on time to go to work! That's a goal? Yep! Goal: wake up early to be on time, so you receive a paycheck.
Goal setting provides direction. There are so many pathways a person could go for a career. Some want to be in sales, others maybe want to be in the medical field. One of them setting a goal to land a job in a big company, the other working towards starting their own practice. With a vision in mind, they work hard towards each goal. The goals are specific to the person, which in turn provides them with a pathway to their career. It will effect what school they choose to study at, their budgets, social life ect. And it provides them with a sense of direction in how they are living their lives.
Motivation. Everyone needs motivation. Goal setting creates the opportunity to be motivated. I say this because I find there are so many people out there who are quick to write something down, but lose sight of their goals the first chance of failure that presents itself. There is a reason you write down a goal. You are looking forward to something better and it gives you excitement when you are working hard and getting closer and closer to achieving it!
I've got goals, NOW WHAT
Here we are, we have ambition! We are freakin' excited and we are scribbling down all the goals. We are dreaming big and are coming up with different goals that are going to make us better, or the best.
This is the part where we separate the dreamers and the achievers! Like I said I am a dreamer and I think everyone should be, but you can only dream for so long before hard work comes to smack you into reality. YOU NEED A GAME PLAN. If you follow me on Instagram (you should if you don't), or read my blog, then you have heard me say this so many times. With my seventy pound weight loss came a game plan.
My goal was/is to lose a total of 90 pounds. Now, I am sure you can imagine that is going to take me longer than a week. Within the last year I have gone to parties, out to eat, road trips, fairs and all kinds of fun places that have all the foods that aided in my 90 pound weight gain. Just like any other goal, mine had challenges I had to face. This is why you need to dream big first, because you need that one thing that is going to give you the satisfaction of a huge accomplishment, but then you need to break it down and create the game plan to get you there.
S.M.A.R.T GOALS
This is what will get you to success. You guys, I literally learned this in my seventh grade P.E class and it changed my 12 year old ambitious mind.
When you go to set up any of your goals use this acronym.
S: Specific- your goal needs to have one interpretation. There should be no question if someone else was to see your goal, what you are going to achieve. This should cover your who, what, where, when and whys.
ex/
"I want to eat a balanced diet and go to the gym four times a week in order to lose 90 pounds."
M: Measurable- How will you be able to measure your progress? What is going to keep you on track to obtaining your goal? This should be able to answer how many/how much you need to do to get there.
ex/
"I want to eat a balanced diet and go to the gym four times a week in order to lose 90 pounds. Each week I will need to lose a pound and a half to two pounds."
A: Achievable- Is this something I can successfully accomplish? Do I have all the resources I would need in order to reach my goal? Is this something someone else could do?
-You want to make sure your goal is a challenge, something you need to push yourself for and work hard for, but you also need to make sure it is attainable. Make sure you have everything you need in order to get there and you give yourself enough time. This is one of the hardest parts about being a dreamer. There are some dreams you have to break down. This is where a lot of us get and it goes down hill. If you have a goal to lose 90 pounds naturally in three months, you are going to fail. First off, its unhealthy. Second, you did not give yourself enough time, resources, or respect. Bigger goals take more time and you have to give yourself the chance to work towards it!
R: Realistic- this goes hand in hand with achievable. Is this a goal you are willing to work for? Is this humanly possible?
-Some people are really out here saying things like "I want to make $100,000 by the end of this year" First off, they are working for a job that pays them $20/hr. They aren't willing to make sacrifices, or put in extra work. They make this goal in August and don't have any of the resources that could get them to that point. AGAIN, I love dreamers! In fact I love the goal of $100,000, but why not make a goal of reaching $40,000 a year first and in a timely matter. In that case, each year you could add more, hit these amazing financial goals and work your way up to your dream?! Man, was this such a hard lesson to learn for me! When we set unrealistic goals, we see failure and it puts a bad taste in our mouth so we end in giving up and settling.
T: Time- You need a start and a finish to your goal. There needs to be an ending point, otherwise what are you working for?
Going back to my own personal goal from earlier.
ex/
On November 10th of 2019 I will start eating a balanced diet everyday and going to the gym four times a week. Each week I will need to lose a pound and a half to two pounds, in order to obtain my goal of losing ninety pounds, by November 10th of 2020. In which I will achieve my weight loss goal within a years time."
I have my S.M.A.R.T. goal and I am ready to go!
You now have your goal, in perfect form. Here's the hardest part. SEE IT THROUGH. Put in the work. Make the sacrifices. Challenge yourself. You set this goal for a reason! Get up and Get it!!!
